These bookends are exquisite.  They are tall and heavy featuring an owl standing on books atop a pedestal base.  These were made by The Marion Bronze Company circa 1930 using the electroformed bronze method of production.  The owl is a rich brass tone, the the books have red, blue and black polychrome with the bottom base is in gold. This pair is in very good condition. They stand straight and level. Each bookend stands 8 1/4" tall, 3 1/2" wide, 3 1/2" deep and weighs 3 lbs. 5 oz. (6 lbs. 10 oz. for the pair). These were produced by the original Marion Bronze Company owned and operated by Arthur France and his wife Marion in Methuchen, N.J. which was later sold in the 1950's. The bronze-clad method of production was started in the early 1900's and was considered highly innovative. It was an early electroform process which created some of the most outstanding bookends of that era. The process entailed placing a rod (electrode) inside a plaster mold and then using electricity to form a bronze shell around the piece. Some of these products could take up to three days to complete. The cost of time and labor was excessive. None of the foundries survived. However, today, these pieces are greatly treasured and considered show pieces in the homes of collectors.
