These bookends were modeled from the famous lion monument carved in Lucerne, Switzerland commemorating the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 protecting King Louis XVI who sent them to certain death.  Written on the front of the monument and these bookends is: HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI' (To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss).  This set of bookends was made by the noted Jennings Brothers Company of Bridgeport, CT circa 1930.  As with all their products these are beautifully casted with an excellent bronze finish.  Each bookend stands 5" tall, 7 1/2" long, 3 1/8" wide and weighs 3 lbs. 5 oz. (6 lbs. 10 oz. for the pair).  They are in very good original condition.  There is a minor ding in the rear bottom corner.  Authenticity is assured as both are marked in relief on the rear: JB 1570.  There are no breaks, repairs, or, touch-ups

Jennings Brothers was one of the foremost manufacturers of high quality bookends and other art metal designs from the late 1800's through the 1940's. We have never seen an inferior product from them. The detailing and finishes are consistently superb. A truly fine company that has proven the test of time.  Their pieces are extremely collectible.  They were located in Bridgeport, CT.  One of the primary reasons for their value is they could not make their products using machinery because of the delicacy of the techniques used so they were done by artists and craftsmen. The resulting efforts are immediately realized when you find Jennings Brothers items today as the finishing is superior to most of the metal arts companies.  Few compare to this quality.
