Extremely rare, original signed set of antique machine age French art deco bookends featuring a dog and cat by the French master mascot sculptor Henri Payen. This set features a solid bronze cat with a direct stare, arched back and tail standing straight up on one bookend. On the other bookend there is a solid bronze dog crouched in a play bow seemingly unaware of the cat's body language.  Delightful!  Each bookend stands 5 1/4" tall, 5 1/2" long, 3" wide and weighs 2 lbs. 5 oz. (4 lbs. 10 oz. for the pair).  Authenticity is assured as each base is etched with the artists signature H. Payen.  This set is in very good condition.  The solid bronze cat and dog are in excellent condition.  The marble base and backplate has some minor chips. There are no breaks, touch-ups, or, repairs. The figures are firmly attached.  The marble is stable.

Henri Payen was a French sculptor known primarily as a master mascot sculptor whose famous creations were in a variety of forms such as fighting bulls, birds, snails (escargot), nudes, lions, dogs. His hood ornaments sell for thousands of dollars at auction houses worldwide.
