High quality, nicely detailed pair of antique bookends featuring Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.  Circa 1919.  This set shows President Lincoln in profile. These were made in the notable Judd style with the figure done as an inset in a two piece mold.  The bell hallmark is on the base, the back has the waffled finish.  The backplate is secured to the base with single slotted screws.  Each bookend stands 5 5/8" tall, 6 1/8" long, 2 1/4" deep and weighs 2 lbs. 14 oz. (5 lbs. 12 oz. for the pair).  The backplate and base are nicely detailed and all are made of cast iron.  The framed area is in verdigris tone with the inset in a brown/bronze color.  They are in very good condition with some minor finish loss.  Authenticity is assured as they not only have the Judd hallmark, they are also marked with the Judd series number 9747.

The Judd Manufacturing Company had a long and varied history starting in the early 1800's.  Run by members of the Judd family they began producing high quality bookends and bookracks in the early 1900's to the late 1930's at their final location in Wallingford, CT.  They worked in cast iron, brass and bronze using the sand casting method of production.  There products are all high quality.  Typically they used numbers in the 9000 series to identify the mold.
