Charming, heavy, high quality set of original 1920's Ronson bookends featuring a Winged Nature Angel. The Winged Angel is sitting comfortably with her back resting on the book shaped backplate.  She has a book by her side while holding a butterfly on her hand. Down on the corner of the base formed as greenery is a tiny frog looking up at the angel.   Adorable.  This set is intricately detailed. Each bookend stands 6 1/4" tall, 4 1/2" long, 4 1/2" wide and weighs 3 lbs. 5 oz.  (6 lbs. 10 oz. for the pair).  The pair are in very good condition.  They are completely original and have no breaks, repairs or touch-ups.   These are in the Ronson 'Royal Bronze' which is a black verdigris finish. Gorgeous.

Often times when people hear the name Ronson they think of the famous lighter company, however, Louis Aronson, the originator of the Ronson name produced some of the finest art metal products of his day, and, some of the most collectible we have today.  Louis Vincent Aronson (1869-1940) was born in New York City, son of Prussian immigrant parents.  He was a brilliant student who graduated from public school at the age of 12 and entered a technical school specializing in metallurgy, practical metal working and mechanical drawing. As a young man he set up a laboratory in his parent's basement and developed plating processes among other things. He graduated as a qualified, expert metallurgist, draftsman and designer at the age of 15.  By the time he was 16 he sold the patent rights to one of the plating processes he developed giving him the money to start his own company called Art Metal Works in New York City.  Over the years he developed a number of patents and inventions for lighters including important safety features, children's toys, metal finishes.  Later in life he ventured into politics and banking.  During his lifetime he dedicated much of his time and money to causes that benefited the under-privileged and especially children.  His bookends produced varied widely in subject but many had similarities in design and finishes.  All are highly collectible.
