Rare, original set of high quality antique bookends featuring the 'Three Musketeers' characters of the Alexandre Dumas historical novel.  These bookends were made by Jennings Brothers of Bridgeport, CT. Circa 1930. Each bookend is formed as a book splayed with the pages down. Riding on the book are Dumas' characters: Athos, Porthos and Aramis clowning around. Very funny. As would be expected these are beautifully made with the book in a bronze finish, the Musketeers in gold.  Each bookend stands 5 5/8" tall, 5 1/4" long, 4 1/8" wide and weighs 3 lbs. 4 oz. (6 lbs. 8 oz. for the pair).  This set is in very good original condition with no breaks, cracks or repairs. The hats, hands and feet which are so often broken are all intact. Authenticity is assured as both have the 'JB' hallmark on the side.

Jennings Brothers was one of the foremost manufacturers of high quality bookends and other art metal designsC from the late 1800's through the 1940's. We have never seen an inferior product from them. The detailing and finishes are consistently superb. A truly fine company that has proven the test of time.  Their pieces are extremely collectible.  They were located in Bridgeport, CT.  One of the primary reasons for their value is they could not make their products using machinery because of the delicacy of the techniques used so they were done by artists and craftsmen. The resulting efforts are immediately realized when you find Jennings Brothers items today as the finishing is superior to most of the metal arts companies.  Few compare to this quality.
