Very rare antique original folding and extendable bookrack letter holder made by the Judd Company of Wallingford, CT, USA. Circa 1915.  The face-plates feature a pack of four bulldogs or boxers sitting companionably together.  It is beautifully crafted with excellent detailing.  The inner plate features three rounded areas surrounded by a rope border.  The end plates which would hold the letters are connected by three extendable metal rods.  The overall dimensions are: 5" tall, 7" wide, 20" long and will extend another 10" to a total of 30".  This is very sturdy weighing 4 lbs. 14 oz.  The letter holders will pivot up and rest on the connecting rods.  The connecting rods can be extended or contracted as it has an inner rod.  These are made of cast iron with a brass finish.  They are in very good original condition with no breaks, cracks, missing parts, or, repairs.  We have not polished them so there is a dark patina.  Authenticity is assured as both face-plates have the Judd numbers 9811 and 6699 in relief on the rear.

The Judd Manufacturing Company had a long and varied history starting in the early 1800's as a harness manufacturer in New Britain, CT.  They changed locations as they were managed by various members of the Judd family.  Over the 100 years of existence they had a variety of items in production.  In the early 1900’s to the late 1930’s they began producing high quality bookends and bookracks at their final location in Wallingford, CT.  They worked in cast iron, brass and bronze using the sand casting method of production.  There products are all high quality.  Typically they used numbers in the 9000 series to identify the mold.
