This is an original pair of antique bookends featuring a gentleman elegantly attired in a top coat and tails struggling to hold a stack of books. This set was made by the Joseph B. Hirsch Company, NY, NY,  circa 1930.  JB Hirsch made some of the most innovative and creative bookends of the early 20th century. He followed many of the French artists in their innovative design. His bookends stand out and are readily noticed with the mock ivory portions imitating the french bronze and ivory designs of the time.  Many show great humor and whimsy.  This set measures 7 1/8" tall, 5 1/8" long, 3 1/4" wide and weighs 3 lbs. (6 lbs. for the pair).  The figure's are in the blue/gold Hirsch finish, the heads are painted ivory, they are mounted on the original potorro marble bases. They are in very good original condition with some finish loss mostly on top of one book.
