Magnificent pair of vintage electroformed bronze bookends featuring the Italian poet of the middle ages Dante Alighieri and his unrequited love Beatrice Portinari.  This set was made by the Marion Bronze Co., Metuchen, N.J. circa 1955. Each bookend stands 6 3/4" tall, 5 3/4" wide, 2 7/8" deep and weighs 3lbs. 10 oz. (7 lbs. 4 oz. for the pair). They are in good original condition with minor dings and finish loss. Authenticity is assured as both are incised with the MB hallmark on the rear. The Marion Bronze Company located in Metuchen, N.J. was the last company to produce metal arts products using the electroformed bronze technique.

This set was made using the much coveted and highly collectible electroformed bronze process of manufacturing. The bronze-clad method began in the late 1800's and was used for bookends and other metal arts products. It created some of the most outstanding bookends of that era. The process entailed placing a rod (electrode) inside a plaster mold and then using electricity to form a bronze shell around the piece. There were numerous treatments and steps involved in this method.  Some of these products could take up to three days to complete. The cost of time and labor was excessive. None of the foundries survived. However, today, these pieces are greatly treasured and considered show pieces in the homes of collectors.
