Nicely detailed pair of vintage bookends featuring a rare white-robed monk reading.  These bookends were made by the Marion Bronze Company, Metuchen, NJ.  Circa 1959.  Each bookend stands 7 1/4" tall, 4" wide, 4" deep and weighs 2 lbs. 14 oz. (5 lbs. 12 oz. for the pair).  They are in very good original condition.  There are minor blemishes.  There are no breaks, repairs, or, touch-ups.  Authenticity is assured as each has the MB shopmark incised on the back.

Marion Bronze Company began in the 1920's by Arthur France and his wife Marion.  They bought out the Pompeian Bronze Company of New York and relocated it to Metuchen, NJ.  During the period the France's owned the company they did not physically mark their products, they only used paper labels.  In the mid-1950's the company was sold and the new owner began incising the shopmark MB on the products giving us a way to date the items. The Marion Bronze Company was the last to use the electroformed bronze process.

These bookends were made using the much coveted and highly collectible bronze-clad method of production which utilized electricity via an electrode built into the plaster mold of the subject piece. Bronze was then electroformed onto the plaster mold. This was extremely innovative in the 1920's. Unfortunately, it was also very costly for labor and materials. Some bookends could take as long as three days to be completed. They created some of the most detailed and sought after bookends we have today. They're getting quite scarce to find in good condition since they are somewhat fragile.
