This extremely rare set of bookends show richness, warmth, and, humor. They are intricately detailed. Both are signed Paul Herzel, Pompeian Bronze and number 156. Each stands 6" tall, 3 3/4" wide, 2 3/4" deep and weighs 2 lbs. They are extraordinary and in very good/excellent condition. Authenticity is assured as both are signed by Paul Herzel on the top of the base and incised Pompeian Bronze on the rear.  We can find no flaws, there is some white residue on the rear which could be old paint we have not removed.   Paul Herzel was known for his animal sculptures.  His attention to detail and conformation makes him one of the most collectible artists for American bookends.  This set demonstrates his ability and sense of fun. A treasure. The bronze-clad method of production started in the early 1900's. It was highly innovative using an electroform process. The process entailed placing an electrode in a plaster mold and then using electricity to form a bronze shell. It was extremely time consuming and labor intensive taking up to three days to complete a piece. Unfortunately, none of these foundries survived. However, today these art products are greatly treasured and considered show pieces in the homes of collectors.
