Rare and beautiful set of polychrome bookends depicting Jean-Francois Millet's (1814-1875) painting known as The Angelus.  This set of bookends features peasant farmers praying in the field over their crops in response to the ringing of the church bells in the distance.  They were made by the Kronheim and Oldenbusch Company, USA and have their shopmark on the rear.  They are based on the original painting by French artist Jean-Francois Millet was commissioned by a man in the United States. He never finalized the purchase. Originally the painting was titled 'Prayer for The Potato Crop' and was later changed to 'The Angelus'. This set of bookends is signed 'Pickarski' on the front. Kronheim and Oldenbusch created many high quality metal arts products. This set is quite heavy for its size. Each bookend stands 4 1/2" tall, 5 3/8" wide, 2 3/4" deep and weighs 3 lbs. 14 oz. They are in very good condition. The polychrome finish is over 90% intact.
