Extremely rare pair of antique bookends featuring a Bull Dog puppy. This set was made by the Pompeian Bronze Co., NY, NY. Circa 1920. This exquisite set of bookends was designed by sculptor Paul Herzel for Pompeian Bronze Company. Both are marked 'MICKEY' on the back and signed 'Paul Herzel' on the topside. Paul Herzel did a series of animal sculptures. His work is among the most treasured by collectors. These are frequently sold singly in antique shops as sculptures, they are completely figural and works of art. Each bookend stands 6 3/4" tall, 5" wide, 3" deep and weighs 2 lbs 3 oz. (4 lbs. 4 oz. for the pair). They are in very good original antique condition.  There are no breaks, repairs, or, touch-ups. They were produced using the highly desirable bronze-clad method. The bronze-clad method in the 1920's was highly innovative. It was an early electroform process which created some of the most outstanding bookends of that era. The process entailed placing a rod (electrode) inside a plaster mold and then using electricity to form a bronze shell around the piece. Some of these products could take up to three days to complete. The cost of time and labor was excessive. None of the foundries survived. However, today, these pieces are greatly treasured and considered show pieces in the homes of collectors.
